The Tanzania Southern Circuit lies near the southern borders of the country, closer to the bustling city of Dar es Salaam and the Spice Island of Zanzibar. The parks are less crowded compared to Northern Circuit Parks. The largely unspoiled vistas, a wide variety of safari activities especially water-based safari activities, and incredible game drive characterize the Tanzania Southern Circuit.
Unlike the North of Tanzania, the Southern part of the country offers some beautiful off-the-beaten-track safari experiences. Of the 20 national parks in Tanzania, five are located in the south – Nyerere, Mikumi, Ruaha, Udzungwa, and Kutulo which form the Southern Circuit. Huge craters and volcanoes testify to the tectonic forces that have shaped the landscape over millions of years.
One of the reasons why the South of Tanzania is such a wonderful destination is because of its value for money. Whilst the lodges are generally cheaper than those found in the North of Tanzania, the luxury you get for your money is also generally higher. The accessibility from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar also makes it cheaper and quicker to get to, meaning you spend more time in camp rather than traveling.
Whilst all southern circuit destinations offer wonderful vehicle and walking safaris, Nyerere National Park also offers boating safaris which allow you to traverse through this watery maze and view its inhabitants such as hippos, crocodiles, and the many water-based birds. The diversity of the parks Nyerere, Mikumi, and Ruaha complement each other spectacularly and make for an all-around brilliant safari experience.
