Camping in the Serengeti, what to expect?

If you are looking for a real life-changing safari adventure, a camping safari is recommended. By the way, it is the cheapest option for your safari tour in Tanzania.

A visit to the Serengeti is high on any traveler’s bucket list in Africa. This park offers some of the greatest wildlife viewings in the world; one of the few places where you can witness all “Big Five” and the “Great Migration” of herds of over a million wildebeest as well as hundreds of thousands of other hoofed animals, including zebras, eland, and gazelle.

So what you can expect when camping in the Serengeti:

  1. Teamwork

Participatory camping entails the set-up/break-down of your tent and helping the cook with meal preparation and clean-up duty. Camp set-up is a nice way to move and stretch after a few hours on the safari vehicle. The tents are easy to assemble and the local crew (made up of a driver, and a cook will give you thorough lessons.  By the end of the trip, you will feel like an expert! Meal preparation is a fun and unforgettable experience.

  1. Eat Dinner in a campfire

The food is often prepared together with a cook before you end the day together around the campfire under the starry sky of Africa. The campfire tends to keep most animals away and once it started to go out, it is time for bed.

  1. Facilities are basic

When camping in the Serengeti expect the facilities to be very limited. The camps have simple toilets and showers. With this safari-style do not expect luxuries. Most of the safari vehicles have a cool box where you can store a few beers to cool off the body after a full day game drive.

  1. True Wildlife

Whilst having dinner you will hear the sounds of lions roaring in the distance and hyenas laughing. Sometimes animals like zebras and hyenas walk through the camp but this should not make you nervous about what you might encounter since the security is guaranteed.

  1. It gets cold at Night

The Serengeti gets cold in the early morning and evenings, so be prepared! You’ll need to pack both summer and winter clothing, such as a woolly hat, gloves, and thick socks. You’ll also want plenty of warm clothing for sleeping in.
