Cultural, Nature & Unique Experiences

Lake Eyasi is a seasonal shallow Salt Lake at the bottom of the Great Rift Valley at the foot of the Serengeti Plateau, south of the Ngorongoro highlands. The Lake surpasses Lake Manyara in size, and the saline border extends and shrinks depending on the amount of rain that has fallen over the year. The Lake covers an area of about 1,050 square km (400 square miles).

The area is home to the Hadzabe bushmen that will take you on a hunt. The Hadzabe Bushmen are one of the last remaining hunter-gatherers in Africa and live solely on the land. Just as in the Stone Age, as our ancestors did for thousands of years. You can also find the Datoga and Mbulu tribes here.

Lake Eyasi is also the habitat of large populations of flamingos and pelicans in the breeding season. The other birds at Lake Eyasi include Fischer’s lovebird, pelican, spurfowl, and stork.

  • Cultural Encounters

One of the biggest draws of Lake Eyasi is the chance to meet the Hadzabe people, one of the last true hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa. Visitors can also interact with the Datoga, known for their blacksmithing skills and pastoral lifestyle.

  • Seasonal Lake Landscape

The lake’s appearance changes throughout the year. During the wet season, it fills with water and attracts birdlife, while in the dry season it becomes a vast, open salt flat with dramatic scenery.

  • Birdlife

Lake Eyasi is a great spot for birdwatching, especially when the water levels rise. Flamingos, pelicans, and other waterbirds can often be seen.

  • Scenic Rift Valley Views

Surrounded by escarpments and acacia woodlands, the area offers stunning views typical of the Great Rift Valley.

  • Hadzabe Hunting Experience: Join early morning hunts and learn traditional survival skills
  • Cultural Visits: Interact with the Datoga community and observe local craftsmanship
  • Birdwatching: Spot flamingos and other species around the lake
  • Nature Walks: Explore the surrounding landscapes on foot
  • Photography: Capture unique cultural moments and striking landscapes
