Nyerere National Park (the Selous), Southern Tanzania
If you are looking for an authentic wilderness experience Nyerere National must be on your premier. It is twice the size of the famous Serengeti National Park.
Coined a “Wild Heart of Africa”, Nyerere National Park was renamed to Nyerere National Park in honor of the first president of the United Republic of Tanzania. The park was formed from the formerly Selous Game Reserve. The reserve was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to the diversity of the wildlife. The name was initially named after the great explorer and hunter Frederick Courtney Selous.
The newly established national park finds itself a short domestic flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar and makes for the perfect safari component in a safari and beach itinerary. Due to its vast size, no matter where you stay here, you can be sure of a game-viewing experience away from the hustle and bustle of Tanzania’s Northern parks.
Activities in Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park combines boating safaris, walking safaris, and your regular vehicle safaris. Add into the mixture the option of visiting the hot springs, picnic lunches, and days exploring the vast watery landscape then you could argue the Nyerere offers the most varied safari experience in Tanzania.
