Safari Packing List

Packing for a Safari adventure? Here’s is what you need!

Packing for an African safari is an exciting yet strategic endeavor. You want to be prepared for adventure, but you don’t want to be weighed down by unnecessary baggage. Remember, you’ll be traveling in a safari vehicle with your luggage, so keeping it manageable is key.

To help you pack just the right amount for your incredible Tanzania safari, we’ve created a packing list based on years of experience. This list will ensure you have everything you need, without overpacking:

  1. Clothing:

Tops:

  • 1-2 Long-sleeved shirts (for warmth and sun protection)
  • Warm sweater or light jacket (essential for cool evenings and mornings in the Ngorongoro Crater, where temperatures can drop to 0 degrees Celsius)
  • Regular, light shirts or T-shirts (aim for one per day of your safari)

Bottoms:

  •     1-2 Pairs of light cotton trousers (comfortable and versatile)
  • Shorts or a loose skirt (for warmer days)

Other:

  •    Swimsuit/trunks (most lodges have pools)
  • Hat (visor or cap) for sun protection

Color Note:  Many safari travelers opt for khaki or neutral colors. This helps you blend in with the natural environment, whether walking or riding in a vehicle.  It also prevents dust

  1. Essential Medications for Your Safari:

It’s important to be prepared with any necessary medications for your safari. Here’s a list of common recommendations:

  • Prescription Medications: Bring all prescribed medications, including any special needs items.
  • Antimalarial Drugs: If recommended by your doctor, pack Malarone, Lariam, or another prescribed antimalarial medication.
  • Motion Sickness: Pack motion sickness tablets if you are prone to nausea during travel.
  • Allergies: Bring antihistamines (Claritin, Loratadine, Azelastine) as these can be difficult to find in Tanzania.
  • Asthma: Pack your inhaler, as dust can trigger asthma symptoms.
  • Insect Repellent:  Mosquitoes are most active in the early morning and evening. Repellent is a good idea, or consider wearing long sleeves during these times.
  • Sunscreen:  The equatorial sun is strong, especially at higher elevations like Ngorongoro and the highlands. Use a sunscreen with SPF 40 or higher to protect your skin.
  1. Snacking on Safari:

While most hotels and lodges provide full meals, the adventures of a safari can make you extra hungry! It’s a good idea to pack some snacks:

  • Easy-to-Pack Options:  Biscuits, chips, cookies, or other packaged snacks are convenient.
  • Fruits: Pre-washed or dried fruits are great choices.
  • Chocolate Bars:  A classic treat for a boost of energy.
  • Nuts:  A variety of nuts, like cashews or peanuts, are good for a healthy snack.

You can also find some fruits and nuts at local villages as you travel through Tanzania.

  1. Safari Essentials:

While you might not need sunglasses on a cloudy day, they’re still a good idea for protecting your eyes from wind, dust, and insects while you’re enjoying the safari.

Here’s what we recommend packing:

  • Sunglasses:  Protect your eyes from the elements.
  • Bandana or Handkerchief:  Useful for keeping dust out of your face.
  • Adapter for Electric Plugs:  Tanzania uses three-pronged plugs, similar to those used in England.
  • Photocopies of Documents:  Keep copies of your passport and other important travel documents.
  • Camera and Equipment:  Capture those amazing safari moments.
  • Hand Sanitizer or Disinfectant:  Keep your hands clean.
  • Personal Hygiene Items:  Sunscreen, insect repellent, and other essentials.
  • Notebook and Pen:  Jot down your observations and memories.
  • Binoculars: They let you see animals up close without disturbing them.
