What are the Tanzania Wild Giants and where to see them?

The Tanzania wild giants include African elephants, hippo, black rhinoceros, and African or Cape buffalo. Elephant, rhinoceros, and Cape buffalo made their way into Big 5 – the most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. So, where to see them? Here is the summary:

1. African Elephant – Best seen in Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park famous for its largest elephant population covers an area of 2,850 square kilometers which places it as the sixth largest national park in Tanzania. This park was named after the Tarangire River which plays an important role during the dry season when animals gather along the river in search of water. Between August and October, Tarangire National Park offers fascinating wildlife viewing.

2. Hippo – the best place to see them is Katavi National Park

Katavi National Park is located in the western part of Tanzania with approximately 4,471 square kilometers (1,726 sq mi) in the area which makes it the third-largest National Park in Tanzania. This pristine park is quite hard to access by road, so the easiest way in and out is by charter flights. Katuma River found in the park plays an important role during the dry season where animals gather along the river in search of water. Between June and October Katavi National Park offers fascinating wildlife viewing.

3. Black Rhinocerous – readily seen in Ngorongoro Crater

Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater Sometimes described as an ‘eighth wonder of the world has been part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) since 1973. 4. African or Cape Buffalo – Best seen in Ngorongoro Crater

African or Cape buffalo is one of Africa’s most dangerous animals and is said to have killed more big game hunters than any other animal in Africa. An impressive creature, males can reach heights of 6ft and weigh a hefty 1, 750 lbs. Cape Buffalo is most aggressive when it has been wounded, or if one of the calves from the herd is under attack. 

These animals made their way into the Big 5 ranking because of their size, moody behavior, and their ability to charge with no warning. Large herds of African Buffalo are encountered in the Ngorongoro Crater.
